5 Easy Interior Mods to Modernize Your Daily Driver (Subaru, Golf, Falcon, Commodore)

Interior Upgrades / How-To · · 5 min read

Five reversible interior upgrades you can finish in one afternoon — no electrician, no permanent changes, and a cabin that stops feeling its age.

NIGHTSHIFT AUTO: 5 mods, one afternoon — a phone-mounted, blue-lit car interior with a night city skyline

Daily drivers in Australia cop a hard life: sun, heat, commute kays and the occasional gravel road. Whether it's a Subaru, a Golf, a Falcon or a Commodore, the interior is usually the first place a car starts feeling old — and the cheapest place to fix it.

These five mods share three traits: they're reversible, they need no auto-electrician, and you can genuinely finish all of them in one afternoon.

1. Ambient lighting

The single biggest change per dollar. NIGHTSHIFT™ AMBIENT is a six-strip RGB kit (90cm ×1, 75cm ×4, 25cm ×1) sized for the dash and doors, with 64 colours, brightness control and a music mode through the app. It's USB powered, so there's no wiring — the 30–45 minutes goes into tucking strips along trim seams so you see light, not the strip.

The placement rule that matters everywhere: hide the strip from direct view and aim the light at a surface. A strip you can see looks like a strip; a glow you can only see looks factory.

2. A magnetic phone mount

If your phone lives on the passenger seat or in a cup holder, NIGHTSHIFT™ MAG is a two-minute fix. It clips to a vent — nothing glued to the dash — holds the phone magnetically with an anti-slip silicone pad, and charges wirelessly at up to 25W with a compatible device and a 45W or higher adapter (not included). A magnetic ring adapter is in the box for phones and cases that need one.

Check your vent shape and clearance before ordering, and attach or adjust the phone only while parked.

3. A CarPlay screen that doesn't touch the dash

Falcons, Commodores, older Golfs and Subarus mostly missed factory CarPlay. NIGHTSHIFT™ DRIVE adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on a 10.2-inch touchscreen that brackets to the dash and plugs into the 12V socket — no head unit removal, no cut wires. It also records 4K dual-camera dash cam footage, so the one screen replaces two accessories.

Allow 10–15 minutes for the screen; up to an hour if you run the included rear camera cable.

4. A proper cable clean-up

Free, and underrated. Route charging cables along trim gaps and under the console mat, and retire the cable draped across the gear selector. If a cable crosses a pedal area or an airbag path, move it — that's not aesthetics, it's safety.

5. Deodorise and re-set the cabin

Also free: a genuine interior clean before any of the above goes in. Strips and mounts adhere to clean surfaces; wipe mounting points with isopropyl alcohol and let them dry. An afternoon of mods on a dirty interior is an afternoon wasted.

The one-afternoon order

  1. Clean the cabin and wipe mounting points with isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Fit the phone mount — two minutes, instant win.
  3. Mount and power the CarPlay screen.
  4. Test the ambient strips before tucking anything, then place and route them.
  5. Sit in the driver's seat at night and check for windscreen reflections before you call it done.

Everything here is reversible — nothing cuts factory wires — so a leased or financed daily is fair game. See the live product cards below for current pricing.
